It was the year 2012 when Steven and Fatima Walsh, Owners and Designers of B.Up Pajamas, received the unfortunate news that their 24-year-old daughter Elizabeth Maria Walsh had been diagnosed with stage IV Adrenal Cortical Cancer, a rare disease that only affects one in 1 million people. While the devastating news of Elizabeth’s diagnosis affected her and all who loved her, the decision to fight the cancer was met with great optimism, and she immediately began her brave two and a half year fight to cure the disease. Through her battle she faced countless surgeries, chemotherapy sessions, and treatment options, yet, Elizabeth never stopped pursuing her love of dance and sharing her infectious smile with the world. She even began a blog “The bELIeve Campaign“, which she created to inspire belief in anyone who needed a smile. Seeing firsthand the benefits dance had on her recovery and healing, Elizabeth decided to found the Dancers With Cancer organization, so that other patients could benefit from dance the way she did. But, on August 28th, 2014, Elizabeth lost her battle to cancer and passed away at the young age of 26. However, her family and friends made the commitment to continue what she started, and today the organization is thriving in their mission to help patients with cancer heal through the art of dance therapy.
The “bELIeve In Children Campaign” was established in Elizabeth Maria’s honor and in conjunction with her charity Dancers with Cancer. The bELIeve In Children Campaign’s mission is to provide needy children afflicted with cancer in Nicaragua with the necessary economic resources to secure appropriate treatment through Hospital La Mascota in Managua, Nicaragua. Hospital La Mascota is the only hospital in Nicaragua dedicated to treating children with cancer. Funds are needed to support surgeries; chemotherapy treatment; scans; specialized exams; medicine; specialized equipment; therapy; housing for parents and their children; and transportation as many patients travel from remote villages throughout Nicaragua.
In 2015, B.Up Pajamas designed a beautiful “bELIeve” robe in honor of Elizabeth Maria. The comfortable and lightweight robe is made with 100% cotton and features two pockets, lavender piping trim, and an embroidered “bELIeve” stitching on the chest. Purchase proceeds go directly to the “bELIeve In Children Campaign” and Dancers With Cancer organization. Shop the styles online HERE and in stores now ($92).
