Bits of Lace History: Now and Then
In 1976, a small lingerie boutique opened its doors on Vendue Range in Charleston, South Carolina to a splendid reception. Owner Mrs. Margaret Bobo, a Professor of Pharmacology, watched her shop prosper as her client base grew. It wasn’t long before she relocated Bits of Lace to the world famous fashion district at 212 King Street in downtown Charleston.
Time, however, has a way of changing things and in 1999 Bits of Lace shifted hands to Ruth Brennan, a nurse and entrepreneur. Lingerie devotees continued to frequent the boutique under Ruth’s new ownership. Within a short time, the store’s success warranted yet another move to its current location at 302 King Street.
The beautiful 1880s storefront, previously a bank, art gallery and an arcade made a stunning transformation and became the perfect home for Bits of Lace growing business. High ceilings, ample rear space for fitting rooms and a newly constructed mezzanine office and stockroom or stock and office space were just the beginning. Ruth created a floor plan for easy navigation and added bright, elegant cabinetry as an elegant backdrop to the store’s merchandise.
The design motif reflects the fine European lingerie and luxurious sleepwear available therein. Every bit of the store is stunningly detailed right down to the delicate, hand painted flowers on the original crown molding.
Ruth’s detail-oriented mentality carries over to her merchandise selection. Every item is handpicked and perfect in its singularity. Each collection unique in its design and construction. Ruth and her team are committed to providing their customers with premium, fashion forward products. Their trips to lingerie markets in New York City and Paris ensure Bits of Lace women have the very best lingerie and sleepwear the world has to offer.
