Bits of Lace: A Brief History

In 1976 a small lingerie boutique opened its doors on Vendue Range in Charleston, SC to a splendid reception. The owner, Mrs. Margaret Bobo, a Professor of Pharmacology, watched her shop prosper as her client base grew.  It wasn’t long before Bits of Lace relocated to the world famous fashion district at 212 King Street, downtown Charleston.

Time, however, has a way of changing things and, in 1999 Bits of Lace shifted hands to Ruth Brennan, a nurse and entrepreneur. Lingerie devotees continued to frequent the boutique under Ruth’s new ownership and, within a short time, the store’s success warranted yet another move to the current location at 302 King Street.

Owner, Ruth, watering the flowers

The 1880s storefront, previously a bank, an art gallery and an arcade, was perfect for the growing business. High ceilings, ample space in the rear for fitting rooms and a newly constructed mezzanine for stock and office space were just the beginning. Ruth chose the floor plan based on ease of navigation for the customer, including bright, open space and tasteful cabinetry. The boutique is decorated in a style that reflects the fine European lingerie and elegant sleepwear available therein; most apparent is the attention to detail, which is shown in the delicate, hand painted floral designs on the original crown molding.

This detail-oriented mentality carries over to the merchandise and personnel of Bits of Lace as well. Every item is perfect in its singularity, each collection unique in its construction and all Bits of Lace staff bring special skills and qualities to the table. This level of consideration is necessary in order to bring our customers the very best products and service available. Ruth enforces this by attending market in New York, as well as Paris, to gather the most premium and fashion-forward merchandise to be had.

The core component of Bits of Lace’s business is specialty bra fitting with trained professionals in a personal, private atmosphere. No appointment is necessary for our clientele to speak with a bra fit specialist in store, or over the phone, and be fitted for their very own perfect-fit bra.
